Lusaka, July 15th, 2024 – The E-Government Division (SMART Zambia Institute) is collaborating with Indian partners, MOSIP (Modular Open Source Identity Platform), Karthik, and Open G2P to develop an eKYC (Electronic Know Your Customer) platform for identity verification for the drought relief management system under the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU).

SMART Zambia’s Director of Systems Development, Mr. Luke Mate, announced this during a meeting with the Indian developers in Lusaka. Mr. Mate emphasized the importance of this project, stating that it is a presidential directive to develop the platform and a significant step towards harnessing technology for effective disaster response. “We’re committed to ensuring that this platform is scalable, secure, and sustainable, and we’re proud to be working with global partners who share our vision,” he said.

Mr. Mate further highlighted the benefits of the platform, stating that it will not only improve the efficiency and effectiveness of drought relief management but also provide a model for other disaster response efforts in Zambia. “We endeavor to ensure that this platform is fully owned and supported by SMART Zambia Institute, and we’re grateful for the capacity building and support provided by the MOSIP team,” he added.

Mr. Krishnaan Rajagopal from MOSIP confirmed that his organization was collaborating with SMART Zambia Institute on this critical project. “Our eKYC platform will provide a secure and efficient way to verify beneficiary identities in Zambia, preventing fraud and ensuring that support reaches those who need it most,” he said. “We’re also excited to build this platform on open-source technology, which will enable other service providers to utilize and build upon this infrastructure.”

Mr. Rajagopal emphasized the importance of collaboration, adding that the project was a testament to the power of partnership. “By working together, we can achieve far more than we could alone, and we’re excited to be a part of this innovative effort,” he stated.
